Private Planes Aid in Wake of Dorian
The destruction left by Hurricane Dorian is tragic and almost impossible to fathom. In the Bahamas, hundreds are left without food, water, or homes after tornadoes and flooding. Business aviation has a history of providing natural disaster relief to communities in need, and this time is no different.
Pilots in Florida gave their time, planes, and personnel to bring much-needed supplies directly to the Bahamas. The Sundowners Flying Club started preparing on September 2nd for the storm, gathering supplies to be loaded on to their planes, mainly tarps and generators along with food, water, and medical supplies.
They aren’t the only ones who were geared up to help. Tropic Ocean Airways is a small company that charters flights from Florida to the Bahamas, the fleet includes amphibious Cessna Commanders among others designed to get supplies where it’s needed most without the limitation of a land runway.
Tropic Ocean has also partnered with foundations including the Discovery Land Company Foundation, National Association of the Bahamas, and Global Empowerment Mission. Blue Tide Marine has joined the relief effort, a company founded by retired Navy SEALs that bring together a team of experts across maritime, aviation, and security along with Special Forced operators to help with relief on the ground.
Organizations like HERO, Humanitarian Emergency Response Operator, provide a database of business aviation people with basic information on what is needed after a natural disaster such as Dorian in order to coordinate relief.
It’s amazing to see a different side of private aviation. A group of citizens coming together to help their fellow people in the wake of a disaster where some have lost everything.
